The world's highest marathon, descending from Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters through Sherpa villages and Himalayan grandeur.
The Everest Marathon starts at Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters and descends to Namche Bazaar at 3,446 meters through the heart of the Khumbu region. This is not just a race but a high altitude adventure through the most iconic mountain landscape on Earth, past Buddhist monasteries, prayer flag bridges and towering Himalayan peaks.
There are races, and then there is the Everest Marathon. Starting at Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters, this is officially the highest marathon in the world, and every step of its descent through the Khumbu Valley is steeped in Himalayan magic. Runners follow the legendary trekking route past the Khumbu Icefall, through the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar and alongside some of the most revered peaks on Earth: Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and, of course, Everest herself.
The course drops nearly 2,000 meters over 42.2 kilometers, but the altitude makes every kilometer feel like double. Thin air, rugged mountain terrain, suspension bridges draped in prayer flags and narrow trails carved into valley walls create a running experience of extraordinary intensity. Runners must acclimatize for days before the start, trekking up from Lukla through the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of staggering natural beauty.
The Everest Marathon is far more than a physical challenge. It is an immersion in Sherpa culture, a passage through sacred landscapes and a reminder of how small we are beneath the highest mountains on the planet. For those who complete it, this race becomes a defining life experience.
