The UTMB World Series European Major in the heart of the Pyrenees, where glacial lakes and 3,000 meter peaks define every stride.
HOKA Val d'Aran by UTMB transforms the Aran Valley in the Spanish Pyrenees into the epicenter of European trail running each July. With seven races from 10 km to 163 km, runners explore a landscape of high glacial cirques, shepherd trails, alpine meadows, and peaks soaring above 3,000 meters, all radiating from the charming town of Vielha.
The Aran Valley is a geographical anomaly: a north facing valley on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees where the Garonne River begins its long journey to the Atlantic. This orientation gives the region a distinctly lush, green character, with dense forests of beech and fir blanketing the lower slopes and vast alpine meadows opening up above 2,000 meters. Over 30% of the terrain lies above that altitude, and several summits breach the 3,000 meter mark, creating a playground of extraordinary vertical variety.
The crown jewel of the event is the Torn dera Val d'Aran, a 163 kilometer circumnavigation of the entire valley with 10,000 meters of elevation gain. The Camins de Hèr (110 km) and Peades d'Aigua (55 km) offer equally compelling adventures, the latter crossing the Colomèrs cirque, the largest concentration of glacial lakes in the Pyrenees. Even the shorter Experiència d'Aran (32 km) and Sky Baqueira Beret (15 km) deliver an intensity of scenery that rivals any mountain race in Europe.
As the UTMB World Series European Major, this event draws over 6,000 runners from around the globe and carries significant qualifying points for the UTMB finals. The Aranese culture, with its Occitan heritage, warm hospitality, and legendary mountain cuisine, adds a layer of soul to the athletic challenge. This is where Pyrenean grandeur meets world class trail running.
