From the Matterhorn to Monte Rosa through the Aosta Valley, tracing ancient Walser paths across the Italian Alps
The Monterosa Walserwaeg by UTMB traverses the Aosta Valley from the shadow of the Matterhorn to the flanks of Monte Rosa. With distances from 15 km to 122 km, the courses follow ancient Walser trails past alpine lakes, wild valleys, and historic villages, finishing in Gressoney Saint Jean at the heart of Walser heritage.
The Monterosa Walserwaeg by UTMB is a monumental trail running journey through the Italian Alps, linking two of Europe's most iconic peaks: the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. With four races ranging from the 15 km Regina Margherita Trail to the 122 km Les sentiers des Valdotains (8,200 m D+), the event showcases the raw beauty and cultural richness of the Aosta Valley.
The courses trace paths first walked by the Walser people, a Germanic community that settled these valleys from 1100 AD. Runners pass the Gabiet Dam, cross the wild Valdobbiola valley, reach the Ospizio Sottile, and thread through the ancient stone villages of Alpenzu. The terrain is technical, demanding, and deeply rewarding, with sweeping views of Monte Rosa's glaciated massif at every turn.
Whether tackling the full ultra or the compact trail distances, this race offers an immersion into one of the Alps' most culturally layered and scenically stunning corridors, where the legacy of mountain communities and the grandeur of high alpine terrain converge on every step.
