Mountain Ultra Trail by UTMB

ZAF George , ZAF | 29 May - May 31, 2026

Africa's premier trail race through fynbos, indigenous forest and the Outeniqua Mountains above the Indian Ocean

The Mountain Ultra Trail by UTMB brings the global trail running circuit to South Africa's Garden Route, where the Outeniqua Mountains rise sharply from the coast into one of the planet's most biodiverse floral kingdoms. With distances from 9.5 km to 165 km, runners traverse fynbos ridges, ancient indigenous forests and high viewpoints stretching from the Indian Ocean to the arid Karoo.

The Mountain Ultra Trail by UTMB, commonly known as MUT, is Africa's flagship event on the UTMB World Series calendar. Set in and around the city of George on South Africa's Garden Route, the race sends runners into the Outeniqua Mountains, a rugged coastal range that climbs to nearly 1,600 metres above sea level and separates the lush southern slopes from the vast Karoo plateau to the north.

What makes MUT extraordinary is the sheer diversity packed into every kilometre. Trails weave through fynbos, one of the world's six floral kingdoms and a UNESCO recognized biodiversity hotspot, before plunging into old growth indigenous forests where ancient yellowwood and stinkwood trees form a dense canopy. Higher up, exposed ridgelines offer panoramic views over the Indian Ocean, creating a visual spectacle that few trail races anywhere can match.

With six distances on offer, from a short 9.5 km introduction to a gruelling 165 km hundred miler, MUT welcomes everyone from first timers to elite ultra runners chasing UTMB Running Stones. The combination of world class trails, African warmth and a landscape that shifts from coastal to montane within a single climb has quickly established George as one of the most exciting trail running destinations on the planet.
