The race of the five 4,000ers: 31 km of pure mountain running under the gaze of the Matterhorn and Weisshorn.
Sierre-Zinal is one of the most storied mountain races in the world. Covering 31 km with 2,200 meters of climbing through the Valais Alps, runners ascend from the Rhone Valley to the high point at Nava (2,424 m) before plunging down to Zinal, all under the watchful presence of five iconic 4,000 meter peaks.
Founded in 1974, Sierre-Zinal is a living legend of mountain running. Often called the race of the five 4,000ers, the course unfolds beneath the Weisshorn (4,506 m), Zinalrothorn (4,221 m), Obergabelhorn (4,073 m), Matterhorn (4,478 m), and Dent Blanche (4,357 m). Few races on Earth offer such a concentrated display of high alpine grandeur.
The 31 km route climbs relentlessly from Sierre in the Rhone Valley through Chandolin and past the historic Hotel Weisshorn, gaining 2,200 meters before peaking at Nava. The final kilometers deliver a steep, technical descent of 535 meters into the village of Zinal. It is a course that rewards both raw climbing strength and confident downhill running.
Every August, the race draws elite mountain runners and passionate amateurs alike to the Val d'Anniviers. The combination of rich history, a fiercely competitive field, and an unforgettable panoramic ridgeline makes Sierre-Zinal one of those races every trail runner should experience at least once.
