100 miles of ancient chalk ridgeway from Winchester to Eastbourne, one of Britain's most iconic ultramarathons
The South Downs Way 100 is a 100 mile ultramarathon traversing the full length of the South Downs Way National Trail from Winchester to Eastbourne. Organized by Centurion Running, this point to point classic follows England's chalk spine through rolling downland, exposed ridges and deep wooded valleys, with a 30 hour cutoff that demands both speed and resilience.
The South Downs Way 100 is one of Britain's defining ultramarathons. Starting just outside Winchester, the ancient capital of Saxon England, and finishing at the seafront in Eastbourne, the race covers 100 miles along the South Downs Way National Trail. The route follows the chalk ridgeway that runs like a backbone across the rolling hills of Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex, offering long views over the English Channel to the south and the Weald to the north.
The terrain is deceptively demanding. Though the South Downs lack the dramatic elevation of mountain races, the constant undulation, exposed chalk surfaces and technical footing over flint and rock add up relentlessly. With approximately 3,870 metres of climbing spread across the full distance, runners face a war of attrition where pacing, fuelling and mental toughness matter as much as raw fitness. Roughly 85% of the course is on trail, and conditions underfoot can shift dramatically between dust, mud and slippery chalk depending on the weather.
Organized by Centurion Running and recognized as a World Trail Majors event, the South Downs Way 100 attracts a fiercely competitive field alongside first time hundred milers. The race carries a strict 30 hour time limit and requires prior completion of a 50 mile event. For those who finish, the journey from Winchester's medieval streets to Eastbourne's seafront promenade is a passage that stays with you long after the blisters have healed.
