Torrencial Chile by UTMB

Born a decade ago from the conviction that rain should be celebrated rather than feared, Torrencial Chile has grown into one of the most iconic trail running events in South America. Based in Valdivia, the race sends runners into a landscape that few trail events on Earth can match: the Valdivian temperate rainforest, a rare and ancient ecosystem where towering nalca plants, centuries old coigüe trees, and dense carpets of fern and moss create a cathedral of green. The air is thick with moisture, the ground soft underfoot, and the soundtrack is the steady rhythm of rainfall on leaves.

The flagship Pilolcura course covers 98 kilometers with 3,500 meters of elevation gain, threading along the Coastal Range before descending to the Pacific Ocean. Runners navigate muddy forest trails, ford streams swollen by winter rains, and traverse exposed coastal cliffs where the wind can be relentless. Shorter options like the Oncol (53 km) and Quitaqui (37 km) offer equally immersive encounters with this extraordinary landscape, while the Cau Cau (12 km) and Isla Teja (6 km) bring the adventure to everyone.

This is not a race that promises sunshine and dry trails. Torrencial is a celebration of raw, untamed nature, a place where pushing through cold, mud, and driving rain reveals a kind of beauty and resilience that only winter running can unlock. As part of the UTMB World Series, it also offers a path to UTMB qualification from one of the most remote and spectacular corners of the trail running world.
