Through the vineyards, castles and misty forests of the Vosges Mountains, where Alsatian culture and trail running intertwine.
Trail Alsace by UTMB winds through the Vosges Mountains of eastern France, from the medieval streets of Obernai to forested ridgelines and hilltop castles. This race blends the charm of Alsatian villages, renowned vineyards and the wild beauty of the Vosges into a trail experience rich in culture and scenery.
In the heart of Alsace, where half timbered villages nestle among vineyards and the forested peaks of the Vosges Mountains rise above the Rhine plain, Trail Alsace by UTMB offers a trail running experience steeped in culture and natural beauty. Starting from the medieval town of Obernai, the course climbs into the dense beech and fir forests of the Vosges, passing ruined castles perched on rocky outcrops and crossing ridgelines with views stretching to the Black Forest across the border.
The terrain is a delightful mix of forest single track, grassy summit plateaus called chaumes, and vineyard paths that wind through some of France's most celebrated wine villages. The Vosges may not reach Alpine heights, but their steep, rolling profile and variable weather ensure that every distance on offer provides a genuine challenge.
What sets Trail Alsace apart is its deep connection to place. Aid stations serve local delicacies, the route passes through villages where traditions have endured for centuries, and the post race festivities, with Alsatian wine, tarte flambée and a warm communal spirit, make the celebration as unforgettable as the run.
