Run in the footsteps of Batak kings across the volcanic island of Samosir on the shores of Lake Toba, Southeast Asia's newest UTMB adventure
Trail of the Kings by UTMB is a groundbreaking event set on Samosir Island in the heart of Lake Toba, the world's largest volcanic lake. Runners follow ancient paths through dense tropical forest, past traditional Batak villages and stone relics, with distances from 5 to 100 km across terrain shaped by one of Earth's most powerful eruptions.
The Trail of the Kings by UTMB marks a historic first: the arrival of the UTMB World Series in Indonesia. The race unfolds on Samosir Island, a vast volcanic landmass rising from the centre of Lake Toba in northern Sumatra. Lake Toba itself was formed by a super eruption some 74,000 years ago, and the scale of the caldera is staggering. Runners navigate a landscape that is at once ancient and alive, where dense tropical forests blanket rugged hills and the lake's turquoise waters stretch to the horizon in every direction.
What gives this race its soul is the Batak heritage woven into every kilometre. The trails pass through ancestral villages where ornate traditional houses still stand, stone tombs of ancient kings mark the hillsides, and the cultural legacy of the Batak people permeates the atmosphere. The event's name pays tribute to the kings who once carved paths through thick jungle to connect their communities, and modern runners now follow those same lines.
With distances of 5, 10, 28, 60 and 100 km, the event welcomes runners of all levels to one of Southeast Asia's most geologically and culturally unique destinations. The combination of volcanic terrain, tropical heat, deep cultural immersion and the sheer beauty of Lake Toba makes this a trail experience unlike any other on the UTMB World Series calendar.
